ABOUT DR. SALES
Dr. J. Rafe Sales is a board-certified and fellowship-trained Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and has been in practice since 2007. He specializes in minimally invasive solutions for complex spinal problems, and offers the latest in spinal technology. Dr.Sales has been frequently recognized as Portland’s top Spine and Trauma Surgeon. Dr. Sales founded Summit Spine Institute in 2007 with the goal of becoming the premier institute for spinal care in the Northwest. His mission is and has always been to provide patients with the best opportunity to return to their prior function, be it through non-operative or operative care.
Dr. Sales earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation at Oregon Health & Science University. He then completed a spine surgery fellowship at San Francisco Spine Institute. Dr. Sales served as the Director of Spinal Trauma at Legacy Emanuel Hospital, one of only two Level 1 trauma centers in the Pacific Northwest from 8/2008-5/2016.
Dr. Sales now focuses exclusively on minimally invasive spine surgery and motion preservation. He and his staff have been recognized in the Top 100 Spine Clinics in the US for 6 consecutive years, and is only one of two clinics in the Portland Metropolitan region to have received this honor. We strive to provide the most thorough and complete workup for each and every patient, and provide each patient with at least three different treatment options to consider, including injection therapy and nonsurgical care. Surgical options are utilized only when absolutely needed.
